Starr Fit Club Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Whether you’ve been working out for years or worked out a day in your life, hiring a certified personal trainer (CPT) could be exactly what you need to help you reach your goals and take your fitness to the next level. To help you better understand the benefits of hiring a trainer, what to expect from a personal trainer, and how to choose the right one for you, we’ve answered these questions plus some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to hiring a personal trainer.

Q. Why should I hire a personal trainer/wellness coach?

A. Hiring a personal trainer might seem like something that’s only accessible to the rich and famous, but it’s not! There are many good reasons to hire a personal trainer. Here are just a few reasons to hire a personal trainer:

• Get a customized training plan: For most gym-goers, figuring out which exercises to do and where to start can be the most intimidating part of going to the gym. Working with a trainer can take the guesswork out of it as they work with you to construct a plan that’s tailored to your needs.

• Form check: Personal trainers know how to properly perform exercises and can help make sure that you are exercising safely and with good form to reduce your risk of injury. It’s also a great way to learn how to work out properly so that you can feel more comfortable working out on your own.

• Accountability: Knowing that someone is waiting for you at the gym and that you are paying for that time with them can be a great motivator to get to the gym for your workout. Your personal trainer can also help to make sure you stay on track during your sessions so that you get the most out of your time spent at the gym.

• Try new exercises: Tired of doing the same exercises over and over? A CPT can introduce you to new exercises and equipment to keep things fresh as you crush your goals.

• Push past plateaus: Fit pros know how to appropriately change the intensity of your workouts in a safe and structured manner to keep you advancing. Plus, you’re likely to push yourself a bit harder with a trainer than you might on your own!

Q. What do personal trainer's do?

A. The goal of a personal trainer is to use their knowledge and expertise to help a client reach their health and fitness goals as efficiently, effectively, and as safely as possible. Personal trainers are armed with scientific knowledge and practical know-how related to exercise and human movement such as resistance training, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness training, core training, balance training, and plyometric training concepts. When you first meet with a personal trainer, their job is to assess where you’re starting, gather information about your overall health and lifestyle, and learn about your current goals. They will use all this information to come up with a personal fitness plan that’s designed to meet you where you’re starting and gradually help you build toward your goals.

Q. How many times a week do I need a personal trainer?

A. Current physical activity guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week to work all major muscle groups (CDC 2022). The number of times per week that you work with a trainer will depend on your goals, your budget, and your schedule. If you have general health and fitness goals, then training 2-3 days per week for at least 30 minutes per session will help you meet the current physical activity guidelines for muscle strengthening. For muscle building, weight loss, or performance goals, more days of training may be required to help you reach your goals. If your budget doesn’t allow for more than 1-2 sessions a week with a trainer, you may be able to have your trainer write you a workout for the days you go to the gym solo or better yet at Starr Fit Club we will provide online video training access to fill the additional training day you are not physically in studio training or virtual live with your trainer. In the case of Starr Fit Club we provide online aerobic activity and exercises via our NASM Edge app that our clients add to their week when not with the personal trainer giving them the opportunity to carry out additional time without the additional expenses.

Q. Can a personal trainer help me reach my goals?

A. A personal trainer can work with you to create a workout plan designed to help you reach your goals. They can make sure that you’re working at the correct intensity, doing the right exercises with good form, and offer accountability and encouragement to help you stay consistent in the process. They can also help you troubleshoot along the way if you seem to plateau, or you aren’t seeing the results you thought you would.

A note on meal plans:

While personal trainers can give you basic nutritional guidance according to current nutritional guidelines, they cannot legally give you a meal plan to follow as it is outside of their scope of practice. Some personal trainers get additional certifications in nutrition to be able to guide you with nutrition, but only a Registered Dietician can prescribe a meal plan. Starr Fit Club and its trainer/coach is able to recommend nutrition plans that are optional to you and help set you up with keeping you accountable while educating you on nutrition guidelines for your meal plans which are provided to you for acceptance at your own risks.

Q. What should I look for in a personal trainer?

A. When searching for a personal trainer, you’ll certainly want someone who is credentialed to help you, but you’ll also want to look for someone who is a good fit for you when it comes to location, personality, training style/training philosophy, and niche.

Here’s what you need to know when you’re looking:

• Credentials: A qualified personal trainer will have a current NCCA-accredited certification in personal training. Starr Fit Club and Coach Starr are NASM NCCA-accredited as a Certified Personal Trainer and Stretch and Flexibility Coach, with specializations in: Corrective Exercise, Weight Loss and Management, and Performance Enhancement. You may also ask the trainer what type of continuing education they take or other certifications they hold to learn more about their educational experience. Coach Starr's is a life learner consistently keeping science backed coaching specific knowledge close by so to provide her clients the best fitness outcome in reaching their goals.

• Location: Trainers can work at home (yours or theirs), virtually (live or by writing a program for you to take to the gym with you), in a big gym, in a small studio or boutique, or even in a park! Have an idea of the part of town that will work best for you (especially if you will be traveling before or after work when traffic tends to be at its worst), and which type of setting you prefer. Larger settings may provide more “perks” for its members, like classes included in the membership, while smaller settings offer more privacy for personal training. Starr Fit Club is a private residential boutique fitness studio desined for one on one private training and also offers online classes and virtual training.

• Personality: You can’t always judge a book by its cover, as they say, but finding the right personality fit will matter when you choose your personal trainer. It helps to find someone that you enjoy spending time with since it will make the experience much more rewarding and enjoyable. Need a cheerleader? A drill instructor? Is someone chatty, or quiet? You’ll get a feel for their personality when you meet the trainer, but it might be good to consider your needs before heading into the consultation. Coach Starr is personable, charming, easy going, yet firm, fit to be your cheerleader, professional guidance and has an open communication approach as she is a people person and enjoys conversation with women while providing the support and guidance to hold you accountable.

• Niche: Some trainers will take on any client, but many personal trainers serve a niche population, for example, adults over the age of 65, women between the ages of 30-60, adults with goals to improve movement and feel better, athletes, runners, etc. The benefit to hiring a personal trainer who serves clients with goals that are like yours is that they will have experience in helping others reach those goals and are prepared to help you as well. Coach Starr's specific Niche is women between the ages of 25 to 75, those with imbalances or women seeking self-defense training skills that translate through fitness and the necessary flexibility program offered, and women seeking to balance hormones due to menopause and the stages of training.

A. Yes. If you choose to select only virtual training as an example you will need to ensure you have the proper device and any updates needed to enable the use of our NASM Edge training app for use during your live or video virtual training. This will also be necessary for anyone who will also be training with Starr Fit Club in studio as on your off days with your trainer you will be provided a single or multiple days of exercise training using our NASM Edge app.

Q. Will all my training be online or in-studio?

A. Each individual training with Starr Fit Club will have the option (if local in Houston, Tx) to select training in-studio or virtual training. So the answer to that question depends on the option you select at the time of starting your fitness plan with us. Not everyone is able to train at the studio personally and that's okay, that is why we have the virtual training option as well.

Q. How do I know what coaching plan is best for me?

A. The coaching plan that will be best for you will depend on what your goals are. If you are just seeking an exercise regimen with daily activities for general health benefits, you may choose the "Fitness Coaching" (single or plan option as one example. In another example if your goal is to manage or build strength or manage weight-loss or even get back to an athletic condition or any other reason you may choose the "Fitness & Nutrition Coaching" plan option for a total transformation from the inside out, one of Starr Fit Clubs specialties.

Q. Is Nutrition coaching offered alone, if I am not interested in any fitness exercise program?

A. While we unfortunately "Do Not" offer nutrition coaching as a standalone plan, we offer nutrition coaching as an add-on when you purchase and become a member with Starr Fit Club and select our signature "Fitness & Nutrition Coaching" plan which is also enhanced by our Empower Transformation Academy Coaching Journey.

Q. Is cash accepted for purchasing any sessions or training plans?

A. While we appreciate cash for tips, we only accept paid single sessions and plans or any other of our services via credit/debit cards and Paypal through our website under the fitness coaching service plans. This ensures you receive a receipt for your paid training plan and your sessions are accounted for as you use the sessions each month or day if purchased a single day.

A. We prefer and maintain a professional contact solution by using our NASM Edge trainer/client app where you are able to communicate directly with your trainer there. In the event you are unable to contact your trainer via app for any reason, you may also use our online contact form selecting the button here on this page that reads "Still Need Help? Contact Us". Q. What should I bring with me and wear for fitness training in-studio?

A. You should always bring a minimum of 18 oz. water bottle or other form of hydration, a drying towel, and wear loose or spandex fitting clothing that allow for you to move freely. If any food or snacks are brought with you, you must contain them properly away from the fitness studio.

Q. Am I able to bring my minor (child) or teen with me to fitness studio?

A. We "Do Not" accept children or teens to be present during any fitness training in our facility for liability purposes and the health and safety of the child/teen. If for any reason you do not have a babysitter or anything else comes up and you are unable to train unless you bring your child/teen with you, we may ask you to reschedule or you may need to cancel altogether. If or when under any instances the trainer allows for your child/teen to attend you will be asked to contain them away from the gym while you're in training and must bring items in which will keep them busy and safe. Children/teen must be on their best behavior and respect rules expected to be abided by during their presence. Failure to ensure this for your child/teen or omitting their true nature may result in a fine up to $200 for any damages or time taken away from the training focus. We ask parents to take this responsibility serious and have a sense of control of your child/teen if or when this situation arises.

Q. What happens if I get sick just before my training session?

A. If you become sick just hours before on the day of your training session, we will do our best to reschedule as necessary to ensure the health and well-being of your time to heal and avoid the trainer getting sick in the case of possible communicable contagious diseases being spread to trainer or other members. Please ensure that if you are sick or feel you will become sick, stay home. If you arrive to your training session sick without notification or warning, the trainer will have the right to cancel your session on the spot and the training session is considered lost and unable to reschedule or be refunded.

Q. What if I need to cancel my pre-planned session for personal reasons?

A. If you experience the need for canceling your session due to any personal reason(s) known or unknown, we will ask that you produce a doctor's note, emergency room visit documents, or attendance to such situations as family death. This is to ensure that you have a valid reason for non-attendance of your session. We may also offer virtual training in the event that traveling to the fitness studio hinders your attempt to make it to your training session. Failure to provide documentation will result in an automatic session cancelation and you won't be able to reschedule or be refunded.
